Why is the League of Friends important?

League of Friends associations were set up in the UK to provide support and assistance to hospitals and healthcare facilities within the National Health Service (NHS). These associations, such as ours at South Petherton Community Hospital, are charitable organisations formed by volunteers who aim to enhance the well-being of patients and improve the services provided by hospitals.

This article gives you a quick breakdown of some reasons why the League of Friends of South Petherton Hospital is important (let us know of any we have missed!):

  1. Support for the Hospital: The League of Friends plays a role in supporting the hospital and its services. We often provide financial assistance, fundraising efforts, and donations to help the hospital purchase medical equipment, upgrade facilities, and enhance patient care. This support can be instrumental in maintaining the quality of healthcare services provided by the hospital. For example, recently we have awarded funding for the provision of a mobile ultrasound machine that will allow services to be administered efficiently and effectively.
  2. Community Involvement: The League of Friends brings the community together in a common cause – supporting their local hospital. It fosters a sense of belonging and ownership among the residents of South Petherton, as they actively participate in activities aimed at improving their healthcare services. For example, we are currently sourcing ‘favourite recipes’ in order to print a cookery book to raise funds.
  3. Patient Comfort and Wellbeing: By providing additional funds and resources, the League of Friends enhances patient comfort and well-being during their stay at the hospital. A wonderful recent example is the furnishing of the new end-of-life room, ‘Dorothy’s Room’, which includes a beautiful ceiling light that gives the impression of a blue sky. Another great example of the funds we raise being used to support patient recovery and wellbeing is the installation of a path that transforms the experience of the hospital garden.
  4. Advocacy and Awareness: The League of Friends serves as an advocate for the hospital and the healthcare needs of the community. We raise awareness about the hospital’s services, promote health-related initiatives, and help to communicate the challenges or issues the hospital may be facing. Every year we hold an AGM which provides exactly this type of information and is always well received by attendees.
  5. Volunteer Engagement: The League of Friends provides an opportunity for community members to get involved through volunteering as a member of the Trustees. This engagement not only benefits the hospital but also offers a sense of fulfilment to the volunteers who contribute their time and skills to support a worthy cause.
  6. Filling Funding Gaps: In many cases, public healthcare institutions face budget constraints and funding gaps – something that we all know is being heavily reported at the moment. The League of Friends steps in to fund equipment and services that may not be covered by the NHS budget, with the aim of supporting the hospital to continue to provide essential services to the community without compromise.

Overall, the League of Friends of South Petherton Hospital aims to maintain and improve the healthcare services in the local community. Our efforts and support contribute to the well-being of patients, support staff, enhance medical facilities and the estate, and strengthen the bond between the hospital and the people it serves.
